Community Guidelines
The short version
- Leave the cats in peace. Photograph them as you find them.
- Only real cats, seen by you, where you really are.
- Keep other people, and where they live, out of your photos.
- Be kind to other players, in photos, names and notes alike.
- Nothing sexual, violent or hateful, ever.
1. Be good to the cats
- Photograph cats as you find them. Don't chase, corner, trap or pick them up, and don't feed them just to get a photo.
- Give them space. A cat that walks away is telling you something.
- Street cats are wild animals: they can scratch, bite and carry disease. Don't touch a cat you don't know.
- If a cat is injured or sick, call a vet or your local animal welfare group. The app can't help in an emergency.
2. Real cats, real places
- Every catch is a cat you saw yourself, photographed there and then. No photos from the internet, a screen, or someone else's camera.
- Don't fake your location, use more than one account, or use tools that play for you.
- Toys, drawings and statues are lovely, but they aren't catches.
3. Keep people out of the picture
- Frame the cat, not the people around it. Don't post photos that clearly show someone's face, a car number plate or the inside of a home without permission.
- Don't go onto private property or anywhere unsafe to reach a cat, and watch the traffic while you play.
- Never use the app to find out where someone lives or to follow them.
4. Be kind to other players
- No bullying, harassment, threats or hate, about anyone, for any reason.
- Don't pretend to be someone else, and don't share anyone's personal details.
- Usernames, display names and cat names are seen by others. Keep them friendly: names with swear words or slurs aren't allowed.
5. Never allowed
- Nudity or sexual content of any kind.
- Gore, cruelty to animals, or violence.
- Anything illegal, hateful or dangerous.
- Spam, advertising, scams or links to them.
- Fake or prank sightings of a lost pet, or using a lost pet to scam its owner, such as asking for money to give it back.
6. Reporting and blocking
If something looks wrong, tell us. Open the photo or the player's page and tap Report. Only our team sees who reported it. A photo reported by several players is hidden straight away until we review it. You can also block anyone: you won't see each other anywhere in the app, and they aren't told.
7. What happens if the rules are broken
We review reports and may hide photos, remove names, reset progress gained by cheating, or ban an account, which hides all of its cats. How far we go depends on how serious it is and whether it keeps happening. If you think we got it wrong, email us at IslandOfCatsTeam@gmail.com and we'll take another look.
8. Who can play
You must be 16 or over to use Island of Cats.
